More About Book Restoration: Rebacking
Rebacking is the process of replacing the
book's spine.
If a spine is damaged beyond repair, the
next option (before creating an entirely new cover) is to
reback the book. A new spine is made, but the original front
and back covers retained.
If possible, the original spine is then
glued over the new structurally sound spine, allowing the
new binding to look as close to the original as possible.
